Privacy Policy
What personal data we collect when you vote, and what we do with it.

What we collect
When you vote (vote givers)
We do not ask you for your name or your email address, and we do not create an account for you. What we store against a vote is:

Your phone number is the only personal detail we ask for.
We store a hashed IP address, not the address itself. It cannot be read back to identify your connection, and it is never shown publicly.
Chapa will separately collect whatever details it needs to take the payment — that happens on Chapa's own page, under Chapa's privacy policy, and those details are not passed back to us.
We never receive your card or mobile-money details. Those are entered on Chapa's own checkout and handled entirely by Chapa.
If you create an account
We additionally store a password, kept only as a bcrypt hash. We cannot read it.
If you enter as a competitor
We store the name, TikTok handle, profile link, follower count, category, bio and photo you submit, plus the email address and password you register with. The name, handle, profile link, follower count, category, bio, photo and vote standing are published on this site.
If you win, we will contact you separately to collect the payout details and any identification we need to make the transfer lawfully. Those details are not collected through this website and are not published.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal data.
- We do not share it for advertising.
- We do not publish your email address, phone number or IP address. Public pages show vote counts only.
Who we share it with
- Chapa, our payment provider. We pass Chapa the amount, a transaction reference and your phone number. Anything else Chapa needs it collects directly from you on its own checkout page, under its own privacy policy.
- Our hosting and database providers, who store the data on our behalf.
- Authorities, where we are legally required to disclose it.
Cookies
We use one cookie, and only if you sign in: a signed session cookie that keeps you logged in. It is strictly necessary for the account feature and carries no tracking or advertising identifiers. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising cookies.
How long we keep it
- Transaction records: kept for as long as required by tax and accounting law.
- Account details: kept until you ask us to delete the account.
- Rate-limiting hashes: automatically discarded.
- Creator entries: kept as part of the public record of the contest.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the data we hold about you;
- correct anything inaccurate;
- delete your account and associated personal data.
We may need to keep transaction records even after deleting an account, where the law requires it. Write to info@standingbymigrant.org and we will respond as soon as we can.
Children
This site is not intended for children. Do not make a payment here if you are under 18 without the permission of a parent or guardian.
Security
Passwords are hashed, session cookies are signed and HTTP-only, payment confirmation is verified directly with Chapa rather than trusted from the browser, and every payment notification we receive is logged and signature-checked.
No system is perfectly secure. If you believe your data has been exposed, please tell us at info@standingbymigrant.org.
How we use your information
- To process registrations and vote purchases.
- To verify and count votes, and produce the public leaderboard.
- To contact winners.
- To share challenge updates.
- To meet our legal, tax and NGO reporting obligations.
Consent
By registering as a competitor or purchasing a vote, you consent to the collection, storage, processing and — for the competitor details listed above — public display of challenge-related information as described in this policy.
Changes
We may update this policy. The version published here at the time you pay is the one that applies to that transaction.
